All-Grain Equipment

All-grain brewing does not start with malt extracts. It starts with mashing your grain. "Mashing" is a term used in all-grain brewing to describe the extraction of malt sugars and flavors from the grain itself. It really just involves steeping the grains in hot water for a period of time. Usually, this is about 152 deg F and about one hour. After this, the grain is rinsed (sparged) to collect the sweet liquid. This is boiled with hops to produce your beer. It takes more time and equipment, but allows the brewer more control in his brewing. It is also much less expensive than buying malt extracts. If you're interested in all-grain brewing, this is where to start.
