Flavor: Medium maltiness with very low bitterness; low to medium diacetyl;
faint smoke character; medium bodied with low carbonation.
Mouthfeel: medium body with low carbonation.
Overall Impression: Are generally darker, maltier, and softer on the palate.
Low hopping rates contribute to this soft, malty character.
History: Scottish Ales come in three styles and have a unique system for
classification based on the antiquated Shilling designation
when the beer was taxed according to its gravity and strength.
In a Highland pub, you order a beer by its Shilling designation.
Comments: Scottish Ale is the Caledonian equivalent of English Pale Ale.
The main difference is that they are generally darker and maltier.
