2008 Black Cordon Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa
92pts(CGW) This deep and very well-defined youngster proves that the winery's attractive 2007 was no accident, and, like its predecessor, it expresses plenty of the complexity and curranty fruit of top-shelf Cabernet. It smacks of ripe olives and hardwoods and a suggestion of rich earth before withdrawing and letting youthful tannins have their say, and, if it is too tannic to be enjoyed soon, its lifeline is a long one and its fortunes appear well-assured. Winery Notes:Once again the Black Cordon Vineyards Napa Cabernet Sauvignon is dark – really dark. This wine is impressively opaque purple black with a saturated creamy purple halo at the rim. The aroma is eager to jump from the glass. Heady, rich primary black fruit wafts into the air as the wine is swirled. But the nose is more elusive as it coyly reveals dancing nuances of the first drops of rain on pavement, bramble and herbs, hidden layers of Blackcurrant and a hint of Black Cherry all laced with a bit of anise, graphite, vanilla, menthol and charcoal. There is an excellent, weighty mouth feel. Full, rich flavors of Blackberry, Black Cherry and Blackcurrant on a dense pillow of fine grained, ripe tannins that settle like fine silt on the tongue and palate once the wine is swallowed. A deep complex middle section with bouncing reflections of fruit, herbs, flowers, spice, graphite, and smoke flows seamlessly into a long lingering finish of creamy Black Cherry. This highly nuanced, layered complexity with beautiful balance is classic Paul Hobbs winemaking. Only 285 cases 9/22/2011 Paul Hobbs Consulting Winemaker
