Disc A:
Bill Bruford and Keiko Abe - The New Percussion Group of Amsterdam - Go Between
This latest Summerfold Records release comes from The New Percussion Group of Amsterdam, featuring Bill Bruford and Keiko Abe. The album 'Go Between' was originally released in 1986 but has been unavailable since 1992.
The New Percussion Group of Amsterdam was founded in 1980 by two solo percussionists of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Symphony Orchestra, Jan Pustjens and Niels Le Large, specifically to bring new and adventurous percussion works to a young and modern audience. This re-mastered edition of Go Between comprises four long tracks of material written specifically for the project and its two stellar featured artists.
Bill Bruford has been in the top echelon of percussionists for almost forty years. Through bands like Yes, King Crimson and Genesis to countless sessions and also leading a number of his own groups. Bill has enjoyed success within a number of different musical fields including rock and jazz. He currently leads the successful Earthworks jazz ensemble and runs the equally successful record labels Summerfold and Winterfold.
The eminent Japanese composer and virtuoso, Keiko Abe, studied percussion, composition and piano at Gakugei University in Tokyo, ultimately specialising on marimba, the instrument she was to change forever. Her formidable technical skill and powerful musical interpretation has made her a primary figure in the development of the modern five octave concert instrument, in terms of expanding both technique and repertoire.
This album will be eagerly anticipated by both the substantial and devoted Bill Bruford fan base and also by the growing Classical/World Music devotees. Both will appreciate a musical programme with one of the finest percussion groups in the world featuring two brilliant guest artists. Bill appears on one track

The World Drummers Ensemble
Four percussion masters, global leaders in their respective disciplines, come together for a highly-charged musical exchange; explosive, unpredictable, and unusual. Doudou NÕDiaye Rose ( Senagalese master of the sabar ), Chad Wackerman, ( Frank Zappa, Allan Holdsworth ), Luis Conte ( Madonna, Michael Jackson ), and Bill Bruford ( Yes, King Crimson, Earthworks ), are known internationally as the World Drummers Ensemble. For those unfamiliar with, or unpersuaded by, the astonishing and increasing grip of the percussive arts as an innovative force in music across continents, this Dual Disc CD / DVD offers conclusive proof, were any needed, that rhythm beats at the heart of all things.
The music includes pieces from all members, but also from Switzerland via Pierre Favre, Turkey via the Harem Percussion Group, America via Max Roach, and thereÕs even a re-working of King CrimsonÕs ÒBÕBoomÓ. This Dual Disc CD audio / DVD documents over an hour of their ambitious programme from concerts in Amsterdam and Brussels, and includes a complimentary 15 minute DVD on the reverse side.

Disc C
Pete Lockett's Network of Sparks - One
Back in 1999 and before he was well-known, Lockett toured with Bruford as 'Network of Sparks' and they produced an inventive, culture-busting album called 'One'. The group was a percussion quintet covering many of the disciplines from around the world, in which the Ghanaian and North Indian Dhol traditions rubbed shoulders with progressive jazz and electronics. The music on 'One' is an authoritative guide to the glorious colours available from more sophisticated rhythmic cultures than our own western one, and several of its ideas were carried on into the recent 'World Drummers Ensemble' Summerfold dual-disc with percussionists Bruford, Chad Wackerman, Luis Conte, and Doudou N'Diaye Rose.
Our jaded Western drumset rhythms would probably have fossilised some years back if it hadn't been for the healthy infusion of the rhythms and colours of India, Cuba, Latin-America, and Africa, and it seems that visiting with and borrowing from these and other cultures, while approaching their rhythmic depth with proper respect, is what is going to continue to give our popular music vibrancy. Lockett's Network of Sparks is expertly placed to guide us through the riches of other nations' rhythmic heritages.
