Rosé Wine of the Earth
We continue our efforts to perfect this gris du coeur by insinuating a dollop of white wine, principally grenache blanc, into our typical blend of Southern Rhône red varieties, a protocol initiated with the 2003 vintage. Though not a technique practiced widely southern France, we find the addition of mineral-rich white wine adds some incremental gravitas without creating ponderousness - a mortally dangerous element in a perfect apéritif wine.
Fresh and bright with a pale pink/salmon color reminiscent
of a of Côtes de Provence Rosé or perhaps even a Vin Gris
from Burgundy. Hints of wild strawberry, white cherry,
apple blossom, and the barest whiff of spearmint. Palate is
quite dry and zesty with pale red fruits, blood orange, citrus and a lean yet supple finish. But what is most compelling about the wine is its elegance. We deployed far less skin contact than in years past, and in this instance, less is truly more. Delicious today but will develop added richness and aroma with an additional 6-12 months of bottle age.
Vineyard | Production Notes
Just about 15% of this Vin Gris is composed of traditional
white Rhône varieties, which adds a surprising richness and
foundation to this wine. A small portion of the juice derived from saigner[1] or “bleeding” from the tanks used to produce our Cigare Volant. But, in truth, the lion’s share of the Grenache came from bespoke sections of the Alta Loma Vineyard, harvested at the appropriate maturity level for this style of wine.
[1] Neither did we engage in much batonage - the stirring or resuspension of lees post-fermentation - with this particular vintage. A simplicity of winemaking protocol really gave us the most frank and elegant expression of these grapes.
