Cinsault is a greatly misunderstood cépage in these times of freakishly oversized, overblown vinous Behemoths. It is typically pale-ish in color and generally discreet in its expression of tannin. Nevertheless, it is remarkably fragrant and elegant—an explosion of kirsch and earth, and is a wonderful vin de gastronomie.

This wine is a bit of yin and yang. In 2009, the Ca’ del Solo vineyard gave us a restrained, elegant cinsault, while the 100-year-old vines of the warmer-climate Woock vineyard, in Lodi, yielded a wine with tremendous concentration. Blended together, the resulting wine has both depth and finesse, and is beautifully balanced withal.
