Generally speaking, the great grenache years at Bonny Doon have been very late. It seems in these later, cooler years, the grapes have a better opportunity to develop the nuance and complexity we so esteem. 2009, was no exception - other than this grenache is not from Gilroy (hence the nomenclature). The fruit this year derives from the Alta Loma Vineyard in Greenfield and our own Biodynamic® estate vineyard in Soledad. The wine itself exhibits all the hallmarks of exceptional grenache - bright raspberriosity; a strong suggestion of black pepper and cherry liqueur; and a piney, resinous quality that shows up in only the best vintages of grenache from cooler climats. To those yearning for the early days when CdG was the first wine out of the blocks, this vintage should induce a happy remembrance of Gilroy’s past.
Tasting Notes
Our main man Marcel Proust once remarked that, “the
one thing more difficult than following a regimen is not
imposing it on others.” Though if one has gone to the trouble and expense of getting out a nouveau of grenache in February, it seems a shame not to entreat you to devote the second half of February - and beyond - to a thorough meditation on the virtues of grenache. Full-bodied, dry and aromatic with white pepper, dominant red fruits - strawberry, red currant, rhubarb, soft tannins and silky textured grenache.
To really tease all available horsepower from CdG, a roast
turkey, chicken or other large fowl and trimmings can
hardly be bested. Exceptional food and wine combinations
are a wondrous experience though in all honesty they are
not uncommon - barbecue ribs, grilled tuna, veggies, pasta
arrabiata, tapas, poulet tagine, anything al fresco, al by itself or annointed with olive oil CdG proves itself a partner in bliss.
Vineyard | Production Notes
Dedicated to producing wines in a more unaffected, hands off style, with a particular emphasis on the expression of
terroir, or unique sense of place, Bonny Doon Vineyard created the 2009 Clos de Gilroy from hand harvested grapes from certified Biodynamic® vineyards Alta Loma and Ca’ del Solo in Monterey County. Harvested at 23° Brix, handsorted, destemmed and cold soaked for 8 days to enhance flavor and color extraction prior to native fermentation, extended maceration and 100% ML. CdG is a wildly fruity, peppery, strawberry-rhubarbarity of grenache ready for ones immediate enjoyment.
