Until 1989 Albariño was one of the rarest wine varieties in the world, rarely glimpsed outside the Iberian Peninsula. Since that time, this light yet vibrant white grape has become a darling of wine geeks worldwide with its preternatural ability to pair with all types of seafood, cheese and salty dishes. An air of mystery still surrounds albariño. It appears to have been brought to Spain during the 12th century by Cistercian monks; Alba-Riño (from the Rhine) references its mythic relationship to riesling, while others posit petit manseng as the green one’s original parent.
Pale straw color with green highlights and bright aromas of lemon blossom, white ginger and sage remind one of the pilgrim journeys along the winding paths leading to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. Citrus rind, wild herbs and green almond flavors continue this Spanish interlude as the ‘09 vintage finishes long, crisp and briny. Perfect as an apéritif and wildly appropriate with fresh oysters, camarón en cazuela and Asian foods.
Ca’ del Solo is our estate vineyard on the outskirts of Soledad. We farm Albariño (and other varieties) using Biodynamic® practice, with the belief that this discipline is well suited to restoring vital life-forces to our soil and promoting the farm as something akin to a self sustaining organism. Our winemaking practice is exceptionally light-handed, with minimal intervention and manipulation - unplugged or “acoustic.” This Albariño expresses a beautifully crystalline mineral aspect, great persistence on the palate and a bracingly crisp grapefruit and tangerine fragrance.
