With this cuvée, we bid adieu to our beloved freisa plantings - a rare variety from Piedmonte which we planted in our Ca’ del Solo Vineyard in the mid 1990’s. We used the last of it in this dreamy blend which combines the rich cherry bomb character of freisa with the earthy leathery notes of sangiovese. This is supremely good stuff and all too easy to love. Unfortunately this was the last of the freisa, a difficult grape to grow and vinify, but somewhat moot, as it turns out, as the vines were grafted over to albariño the following year.
The freisa fruit was stomped by our winemaker’s daughter Amélie and her Orchard School classmates. After fermentation the two were blended and aged in tank and
barrel for 12 months before bottling. Intoxicatingly lush
aromas of strawberry, pomegranate, rose petals and
rosemary lead you to expect a fruit driven monster but
this is not the case. The wine is actually quite savory with lovely red berry and cherry fruit, moderate acidity and dry cocoa powder like tannins on the finish. Elegant,
nuanced and positively earthy, the ‘07 Imagine is one
of the finest club member exclusive reds we have ever
produced. It is truly an Italian blend and so it cries out for dishes such as oven braised pork with salsa verde, lamb
loin chops with saffron and cardamom or a turkey mole
with pumpkin seeds, cinnamon and dark chocolate.
