(With an Especially Revealing Scratch-off Label!)
The ‘07 Duckling has a deep red robe (partly from the use of 10% new French oak) with aromas of sour cherry, fresh herbs, leather and earth. The palate mirrors the nose with intensely earthy textures of rhubarb, tobacco, plum and sweet cherry fruit. Medium bodied with savory notes
of wild basil, saddle leather and enough tannin to age well for 2-4 years.
This unique wine features an ugly duckling label for a number of reasons: 1) it’s cinsault which while well loved by a few gets little respect from many 2) it hails from the Woock Vineyard, which has arguably the oldest (125+ yrs) gnarly cinsault vines in the world (see reason #1) and 3) it is a blend of Cn and Pn which ironically enough, given our oft professed allegiance to all things Old World, is the vinifera crossing which gave a benighted world the little understood and even less appreciated pinotage; South Africa’s major red wine grape and the main reason that red wines from South Africa don’t regularly sell outside that hemisphere. So, is this wine a hard sell? No, because as usual, Bonny Doon has made a lovely wine of character and joie de vivre, guaranteed to make you and the folks you consume it with, happier, wealthier and more attractive!
