We invite you to partake in an extraordinary Syrah from the oldest block (the appropriately named “X”-block) of the highly esteemed Bien Nacido Vineyard® in very cool (in a strictly climatic sense) Santa Maria. Hand harvested at full but not preternaturally grotesque levels of ripeness and fermented on indigenous yeast, with a tenure of two years in puncheon, the 2007 Bien Nacido Syrah is the Platonic avatar of syrah - exhibiting all the Northern Rhône signifiers of bacon fat, spice, leather and the delicate perfume of eucalyptus, blackberry and violets. Sure to be a hit amongst admirers of Old World terroir, as well as with brave New World fruit bombardiers.
Winemaker Notes
Farmed using Biodynamic® practices and harvested at a level of ripeness many California wineries would deem insufficient, but necessary (we believe) to elicit the elegance, nuance, vinosity and texture typical of true Rhône Syrah. Less intervention is what we are after; discreet use of oak, moderate alcohol, savory rather
than jammy fruit and yes to the wines’ expression of place, the flavor of the varietal and the soul of the vine. The expression of these later elements is encouraged by “reductive” élevage - minimal racking and conservation of lees. We recommend decanting this wine as it should age tremendously well, and could use some air when consumed young.
