With the release of this wine, we begin a string of three excellent vintages for nebbiolo. The vines in our vineyard are maturing, and the biodynamic practices instituted since 2004 … well, they couldn’t hurt. Unlike some other New World nebbioli [of which there are scant few], this actually tastes like the real thing - replete with rose petal, tar and that iron-fist-in-a-velvet-glove structure. One of the greatest pleasures of wine appreciation is encountering bottles that taste precisely like their archetype, yet wholly unlike any other example - individual, particular and specific, yet paradigmatic. We are optimistic that nebbiolo may just belong at Ca’ del Solo.
Ca’ del Solo is the frontier outpost, Biodynamic® Estate vineyard of Bonny Doon Vineyard, dedicated to producing wines with a particular emphasis on the expression of terroir, or unique sense of place. Our winemaking is generally hands-off, respectful of the originality of the vineyard site. Our 2005 vintage is much closer to a true Piemontese Barbaresco. Fruit - juicy cran-raspberry and black cherry wrapped in earthy leather, tar, flint, licorice and spice with a beautifully round and plushy palate and strong tannins.
