Track pressures will depend of the size of the tire, type of vehicle, aerodynamics, engine position and the conditions of use. As any of these increase so must the working pressure. Initial inflation pressure may vary to obtain these values. Add 3 psi (0.2 bar) cold pressure when using wet tires.
These are minimum running inflation pressures based on a 2,650 lb. car. Pressure below the recommended value will cause excessive sidewall deflection, and compromise the integrity of the tire. Special care must be taken when building cold tires to the recommended pressure.
CAMBER RECOMMENDATION
Temperatures measured at three different points on the tread are an excellent indicator deciding the best choice for camber adjustments on the vehicle. The ideal working temperature range is between 175° F (80° C) and 220° F (104° C) with an optimum inside to outside spread of 20° F (0° C) and with a maximum of 50° F (10°C). In a well-balanced chassis the front and rear tire temperatures should be within 25° F (15° C) with the exception of a rear engine Porsche where the rear tires may run 45° F (25° C) hotter. If these values are exceeded, we recommend the vehicles geometry be adjusted. A banked track, including Watkins Glen, significantly increases the stress on the tires inner shoulder. It is recommended to minimize the temperature spreads by lowered camber settings and a 2 psi pressure increase.
It is recommended that you “scrub” in your race tires. This procedure involves warming your tires up over a couple laps, increasing your lap times over the next couple of laps until you reach your fast time. This should be followed by a cool down lap. The tires should be removed and allow to cool naturally for 24 hours. This can also be done during a qualifying session.
WARNING
NOT FOR HIGHWAY USE: All Hoosier Racing Tires including DOT labeled Hoosier Racing Tires are designed for racing purposes only on specified racing surfaces and are not to be operated on public roadways. DOT labeled Hoosier Racing Tires meet Department Of Transportation requirements for marking and performance only and are NOT INTENDED FOR HIGHWAY USE. It is unsafe to operate any Hoosier Racing Tire including DOT tires on public roads. The prohibited use of Hoosier Racing Tires on public roadways may result in loss of traction, unexpected loss of vehicle control, or sudden loss of tire pressure, resulting in a vehicle crash and possible injury or death.
